From November 21st-22 nd 2024, the EnXylaScope M42 General Assembly meeting took place in winterly Trondheim, Norway, hosted by SINTEF at its headquarters. It was held as a hybrid meeting with 16 onsite attendees and 10 online participants. This milestone showcased significant achievements across the eight work packages, including advancements in enzyme testing, application optimization, and sustainability assessments.

The key achievements that were discussed include:

  • Up-scaled production of the most promising xylan-debraching enzyme candidates obtained from data mining and functional screening approaches.
  • Testing enzymatically modified xylans for cosmetics, nutraceuticals, and personal care products.
  • Developing innovative enzyme cocktails that synergize with industrial processes, offering greener solutions for food and cosmetic sectors.
  • Progress in lifecycle sustainability tools (TEA, LCA, and social impact assessments) nearing final stages.

Work package leaders were also interviewed about the major outcomes of the project.

Besides the technical presentations, visitors had the opportunity to visit SINTEF’s biotechnology and advanced analytics laboratories. Social activities included a walking tour through the city covering the campus of NTNU, the cathedral (“Nidarosdomen”) and the picturesque old part of the town “Bakklandet” amongst others followed by a three-course dinner at the gourmet bistro “Tollbua” located in Trondheim’s old customs house close to the Trondheim Fjord.

The meeting was concluded with follow-up discussions between partners in smaller groups to discuss the next steps. For the near future, the consortium members plan to publish several scientific papers about the discovery of novel xylan-debranching enzymes, apply an actual EnXylaScope xylan in a formulation of a products for cosmetics application and create an e-learning course to name a few.  Successful Project Meeting in Trondheim
