Lund University is a prestigious public research university in Sweden and one of northern Europe's oldest universities. The university is located in the city of Lund in the province of Scania, Sweden. It traces its roots back to 1425, when a Franciscan studium generale was founded in Lund. After Sweden won Scania from Denmark in the 1658 Treaty of Roskilde, the university was officially founded in 1666 on the location of the old studium generale next to Lund Cathedral. Lund University has nine faculties, with additional campuses in the cities of Malmö and Helsingborg, with around 44,000 students in 270 different programmes and 1,400 freestanding courses. The university has 640 partner universities in nearly 70 countries and it belongs to the League of European Research Universities as well as the global Universitas 21 network.[5] Lund University is consistently ranked among the world's top 100 universities. Two major facilities for materials research are in Lund University: MAX IV, a synchrotron radiation laboratory – inaugurated in June 2016, and European Spallation Source (ESS), a new European facility that will provide up to 100 times brighter neutron beams than existing facilities today, to be starting to produce neutrons in 2023.[10] The university centers on the Lundagård park adjacent to the Lund Cathedral, with various departments spread in different locations in town, but mostly concentrated in a belt stretching north from the park connecting to the university hospital area and continuing out to the northeastern periphery of the town, where one finds the large campus of the Faculty of Engineering.

MetGen Oy is an innovative biotech SME with 27 professionals that designs, develops, supplies and markets tailor-made enzymatic solutions and enzymatic biorefinery technologies for pulp & paper, biorefinery and cleantech industries. MetGen Oy was founded in 2008 in Kaarina, Finland, and is backed by some of the leading venture capital investors. MetGen has built incredible new technologies from idea to market readiness and brought dozens of new bio-based value chains and products to existence through open-innovation and collaborative projects. To emphasize this, MetGen is one of the most successful SMEs in Europe with 11 ambitious projects to receive 14.3M€ of H2020 and TEKES funding in total. In addition, MetGen is a member of the Bio-based Industries Consortium. MetGen’s enzyme technology was mentioned in 2019 World Economic forum report as one of the Top 10 emerging technologies, and MetGen has won several awards including the 2019 European Technology Innovation Award, 2017 Millennium Distinction Award, and the John Sime Award in 2018. The near-term goal is to accelerate the commercialization of the proven technologies and widen the bio-based products’ market as fast as possible. MetGen believes that everything that is made from oil today, can be made of wood tomorrow. Until now, the business model for MetGen is to sell the enzymes directly and/or license the related technologies, including MetZyme® enzymes and METNIN™ technology for lignin valorisation, provide support with process design packages, and to provide the know-how needed in their projects. Currently, MetGen does the research and development related to the enzyme solutions and the processes and owns the IP, whereas the large-scale industrial production is done at contract manufacturers’ sites.
