About the project
Sustainable coatings based on lignin resins and bio-additives with improved fire, corrosion and biological resistance
Sustainability is not limited to the materials with which items are made, it also embraces the various coatings that many of them rely on. This is why the sustainability in coatings looks at energy and resource conservation, waste minimisation or efficiency. It also involves the use of renewable and non-toxic products. In this context, the EU-funded LIGNICOAT project is exploring the use of lignin, which has a high potential in terms of cost and environmental benefits.
LIGNICOAT project proposes the development of eco-innovative materials from lignocellulosic biomass in order to obtain bio-based sustainable coatings considering the availability and carbon footprint of resources. The project aims to increase the bio-based content of the coatings while ensuring performance and providing anti-corrosive, fireproof, and antimicrobial features. The validation of the lignin-based sustainable coatings will be performed in an industrial environment under the collaboration of relevant private companies.
LIGNICOAT proposal provides new synthetic routes to obtain bio-resins “à la carte” based on lignin intermediates for application in coatings and validated in an industrial relevant environment (TRL5).
LIGNICOAT’s ambitious goal is to assist in the transition of the Paints and Coatings industry from fossil-based to bio-based products. Depending on the intermediates and the resins used, the estimated bio-content of the coatings will vary between 60-90%. Under this scope, the project outputs will be disseminated to stakeholders and policymakers. Finally, life cycle analysis, life cycle cost and social life cycle assessment will demonstrate the sustainability and feasibility of the suggested solutions.
The consortium is composed by 14 beneficiaries from 8 different countries (of these, 9 are industrial partners) and the planned activities span 42 months and 8 work packages. The project is estimated at ca. 5 M€
