D7.3 - Environmental implications of an innovative enzyme-based process for the production of xylan products
10 March 2025
This preprint presents the final environmental assessment report (D7.3) of the EnXylaScope project, funded under the EU Horizon 2020 programme (Grant No. 101000831). The study evaluates the potential environmental impacts of an innovative enzyme-assisted process for extracting and modifying xylan—a key biopolymer derived from lignocellulosic biomass. Through a comprehensive life cycle assessment combined with a complementary analysis of local environmental impacts, the report examines relevant environmental impacts including climate change implications, resource efficiency, and land-use impacts, comparing the EnXylaScope biorefinery model against conventional, mostly bio-based products that serve the same function. Findings indicate the potential for significant environmental benefits, including potential reductions in deforestation risks, greenhouse gas emissions, and resource consumption when replacing fossil- and palm oil-derived alternatives. This preprint is currently under review by the European Commission and subject to further revisions.
